The Descent

2006 - Rated: R
Runtime: 99 Minutes

Studio: Lions Gate

Director: Neil Marshall

Writer(s): Neil Marshall

Staring: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Jackson Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, MyAnna Buring

Description: A group of women plan a expedition into an unexplored cave. When the cave collapses in, the group of women are in desperate need to find another way back out to civilization. Unfortunately, finding another exit out of the cave is least of their problems when they come across a breed of predators that are unknown to the human race. The women are now facing an unknown race who are at the top of the food chain, and they need to find a way out before becoming dinner for these creatures.

Gore/Violence: The movie is filled with gore and violence. During the movie, people are ripped to shreds, the creatures are torn apart, blood is everywhere in this movie. Its been a while since this much blood has been splattered around. Also, in one scene, Holly falls down a cave and her leg bone breaks through her skin. Thats not even the disgusting part, the other girl pushes the bone back into the leg. Simply Awesome!!!!!

Body Count: The body count is pretty high in this movie. Most of the girls on the expedition are splattered, plus tons of the creatures are slaughtered. This movie doesn't disappoint in this category, this movie can easily be stacked up against any slasher movie.

Nudity & Sexuality: Lots of women, but no nudity. You would think with all the women in the movie it would be a sure thing, but its not.

Death Scenes: The death scenes are pretty basic. Most of the girls die from the creatures tearing them apart and eating them, and the creatures are pretty much all killed using a sharp climbing tool. Nothing really original.

Acting/Storyline: The storyline had some interesting ideas in it, especially with the creatures abilities and inabilities. The problem I had with the movie was that it was really slow to get to the exciting part. The movie was more like an adventure movie like Cliffhanger for the first 45 minutes. I was waiting for Sylvestor Stallone to repel down and show these ladies how its done. Fortunately, the movie does pick up after 45 minutes and takes you on a pretty good ride for the rest of the movie.

The acting was great in this movie, everyone does an excellent job throughout the movie.

Final Rating: I heard some pretty good things about this movie from friends and I felt that it did live up to what I heard. Again, the first half of the movie was really slow moving and took forever to get to the exciting part which kind of took me out of the movie. The second half of the movie definitely picked up and kept me interesting for the rest of the movie. I really think that this movie is worth the money to go see it, the movie has a lot of the elements horror fans are looking for.

Shustaines gives this movie 3.5/5 severed heads!
